ARCHITECTURE + OENOLOGY: PARALLEL TRAJECTORIES
Still another design Arms Race has emerged, one which stands astride the intersection of commerce and culture – namely that of the global wine industry, which has, like parallel industries of fashion, retail. Residential, lifestyle, furniture, lighting, and Product design, etc. pursued ever loftier and “Signature” architects to design facilities which are expected to expand the concept of brand/product experience but to encompass every aspect of the Modern Wine Consumer Experience.
Frequently the location for destination weddings, conferences, team building events, and group outings, the 21st century winery has expanded far beyond manufacturing to encompass hospitality, art gallery/museum, landscape and garden design, retail sales, and restaurants in addition to the prosaic necessity of “winemaking”.
This presentation will present an overview of winemaking basics, exploring how this unique building typology – which frequently is equal measures Architecture and Landscape has exploded in recent years as the global wine industry builds ever more elaborate facilities in locations around the globe – including recently Baja de California and even China.
